English

KEY STAGE 3 CURRICULUM OUTLINE

At Winifred Holtby Academy, we believe that English is more than just a subject—it's a gateway to imagination, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the world. Our passionate and highly experienced English team is dedicated to inspiring your child with the same love for literature and language that drives us. We have crafted an exciting and diverse Key Stage 3 curriculum designed to spark curiosity and encourage a lifelong love of reading. To ignite this passion, we have updated our programme to feature a rich tapestry of texts spanning different eras, cultures, and genres. From timeless classics such as ‘A Christmas Carol’ to powerful modern stories such as ‘Boy, Everywhere’, your child will explore a variety of themes and narratives that broaden their perspective. Alongside these, students will dive into the works of literary giants like William Shakespeare and Willy Russell, laying the foundation for both critical thinking and cultural awareness.

But reading is just the beginning! We know that literacy goes hand in hand with strong writing skills, so our curriculum is designed to inspire students to write with creativity and confidence. Whether crafting gripping murder mysteries, retelling ‘Myths and Legends’, or delving into ‘Literature through the Ages’, your child will learn to write for a range of audiences and purposes, all while sharpening their literacy skills. We also believe that learning thrives through collaboration. That is why we actively encourage Parents and Carers to get involved, reading with their children at home to support their progress and foster a shared love for storytelling.

At Winifred Holtby Academy, we don’t just teach English—we bring it to life!

KEY STAGE 4 CURRICULUM OUTLINE

As your child moves into Key Stage 4, the journey through English becomes even more exciting and takes on a new purpose. At Winifred Holtby Academy, we understand that this is a pivotal stage in their academic life, shaping their future beyond the classroom. Our mission is to not only nurture their passion for English but to ensure they are fully equipped with the skills needed to excel in their English Language and English Literature GCSEs. At KS4, students build on the foundations laid in KS3, delving deeper into texts that challenge them both intellectually and emotionally. They will explore iconic plays such as Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’ and Priestley’s ‘An Inspector Calls’, grapple with the themes of Power and Conflict Poetry, and unlock the mysteries of Stevenson’s ‘The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde’. These texts are chosen not only for their literary value but for their ability to spark thought, debate, and a deeper understanding of the human condition.

In English Language, students will develop their ability to craft powerful and persuasive writing for various audiences and purposes. They will refine their skills in reading comprehension and analysis, learning how to approach any text with confidence and insight—skills that will benefit them far beyond the exam room. We also place a strong emphasis on spoken language. Through dynamic speaking and listening tasks, students will gain the confidence to express their ideas clearly and engage in thoughtful discussions about complex and sensitive topics. This ability to communicate effectively is an essential life skill, preparing them for success in any field they choose to pursue.

FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES AND PATHWAYS POST 16

The study of English at Winifred Holtby Academy opens doors to a world of opportunities. We are proud to see many of our students continue their journey in English at A Level or even university. For those who meet their GCSE targets, the pathway to Key Stage 5 offers the chance to dive even deeper into English Language and Literature, honing their analytical and writing skills to an advanced level.

We maintain strong links with local colleges and the University of Hull, providing workshops and enrichment activities that inspire and challenge our students. Whether it is engaging with literary experts or exploring career opportunities that stem from a strong foundation in English, our aim is to ensure your child is well-prepared for the next step in their educational journey.

EXTRA CURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES

At Winifred Holtby Academy, the learning doesn’t stop in the classroom. We offer a vibrant array of extracurricular activities designed to enrich your child’s experience of English. Theatre trips bring the texts they study to life, allowing students to see the drama unfold on stage and deepen their understanding of the plays they explore. These visits are not just rewards for excellent effort—they are opportunities to connect literature with real-world experiences.

Our close collaboration with the Academy’s librarian also ensures that students have access to inspiring author and poet workshops in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC). Here, students can interact with professional writers, gaining insights into the creative process and fuelling their own literary ambitions. The LRC is also home to our popular children’s book award group, where students meet weekly to read, debate, and critique the latest literary contenders, sharpening both their critical thinking and their love for books.

At Winifred Holtby Academy, we are committed to offering an English curriculum that excites, challenges, and prepares your child for success—not just in exams, but in life.
